“Lannister, Targaryen, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell – they’re all just spokes on a wheel. This one’s on top, then that one’s on top, and on and on it spins, crushing those on the ground. I’m not going to stop the wheel. I’m going to break the wheel”
Daenerys Targaryen
Where was Game of Thrones season 5 filmed?
Game Of Thrones season 4 was filmed in Northern Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Croatia and Canada. The interior studio filming is done in the Paint Hall studios in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
In the fifth season, the filmmakers chose beautiful movie sets in Spain to represent the principality of Dorne. The royal palace Alcázar of Seville, for instance, was used to stage the royal palace and its gardens at Sunspaer.
Dubrovnik in Croatia continued to represent different locations in King’s Landing. Meereen is portrayed with the help of the Diocletian’s Palace in Split, and Klis Fortress near Split. A small town north from Split called Kaštel Gomilica is the place where they filmed scenes from Braavos.
Because of the strict requirements of the authorities, it is not easy to travel with an animal to Europe. That’s why a short scene with Jon Snow’s wolf Ghost is shot in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A similar thing happened when they had to film the Bear scene in California in season 3.
Since there was no storyline behind the wall in season 5, there was also no good reason to shoot in Iceland anymore. The scenes were only limited to some short landscape shots.
The sequence at Hardhome was shot in Magheramorne Quarry, which is also the site of the Castle Black set.
