Where Did They Film the “Mountain vs. Red Viper” Scene?

One of the most shocking scenes in Game of Thrones, the battle where Gregor Clegane (The Mountain) fights and kills Oberyn Martell (Red Viper), took place in a small arena by the sea. This Arena was once a small amphitheater of a 5-star hotel named the Hotel Belvedere in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Hint: Click the map pointer icon in the navigation area for the exact map location.

The Hotel Belvedere in Dubrovnik has been abandoned since 1991 and is located 1.2 miles (2km) southeast of the old town. You can reach this stunning location on foot in approximately 30 minutes by taking the Ulica Frana Supina road in the east of the old town, followed by the pathway Ulica Vlaha Bukovca. This route offers a beautiful panoramic view of the sea, islands, and the old town.

Though there’s an option to drive to the hotel and park in front, we cannot confirm a safe way down to the sea.

Important: We strongly discourage getting too close to the hotel structure, as there are warning signs that it may not be safe and could pose a danger to your safety.

If you take the first option and walk, you should be safe and not come near the old hotel structure.

The Duel of Retribution: Oberyn Martell vs. The Mountain
(Season 4, Episode 8: “The Mountain and the Viper”)
Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) fights The Mountain, Gregor Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson), in a trial by combat to avenge his sister’s murder and defend Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). Entering the arena with flair, Oberyn skillfully dominates the battle with his agility and spear, even bringing The Mountain down with targeted strikes. However, his demand for a confession from The Mountain delays the final blow, and in a shocking turn, The Mountain seizes Oberyn, brutally gouges his eyes, confesses to the murder, and crushes his head, leaving the audience in stunned horror.
