Where did they film the “Mountain vs. Red Viper” scene?
Surely the scene where Gregor Clegane (The Mountain) fights and kills Oberyn Martell (Red Viper) is one of the more shocking scenes in Game of Thrones. The fight takes place in a small arena by the sea. This Arena was once a small amphitheater of a 5-star hotel called the Hotel Belvedere in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Hotel Belvedere Dubrovnik is abandoned since 1991 and is located 1.2 miles (2km) southeast of the old town of Dubrovnik. You can get there by foot which will take you approx. 30 min. Take the Ulica Frana Supina road in the east of the old town of Dubrovnik and later the pathway Ulica Vlaha Bukovca. You will get a beautiful panoramic view of the sea, islands and the old town along the pathway.
There is an option to get all the way to the hotel by car and park in front of the hotel Belvedere. However, we can not confirm that there is a safe way down to the sea.
Important: We definitely wouldn’t recommend getting to near to the hotel structure. There are warning signs that the structure is not safe and can cause danger to you’re safety.
If you take the first option you should be safe. You won’t come near the old hotel structure.

The fight between Oberyn Martell and The Mountain
(Season 4, Episode 8: “The Mountain and the Viper ”)
Tyrion is prosecuted for the death of King Joffrey. Before the trial ends, however, he demands that his fate should be decided in the trial by combat. Oberyn Martell finds out that The Mountain will be the one that will fight against Tyrion’s champion. To seek revenge for his sister, who was apparently killed by The Mountain, he decides to fight in Tyrion’s name.
At the arena, Oberyn is very confident that he will win the battle. He enters the arena with making a show for the audience by skillfully wielding his spear. The Mountain, not impressed attacks him. Oberyn has no problems at first and he dominates the fight. He injures his opponent on the Achilles heel and brings him down with a final blow into his chest. But Oberyn is not satisfied. He thinks that The Mountain will die without confessing that he was responsible for the rape and murder of his sister and her children.
Then The Mountain suddenly grabs Oberyns foot and throws him to the ground. Holding Oberyns head he slowly pokes his eyes out with his thumbs. While still holding Oberyns head Gregor Clegane confesses he was the one killing Oberyns sister and her children. Then he crushed his head.
