Where did they film the scene where Captain Corelli returns to Pelagio?

Captain Corelli (Nicolas Cage) returns to the island and finds Pelagio (Penélope Cruz) near a small church. It is called Holy Monastery of St. Fanentes and its located in the ruins of the Ancient Acropolis of Sami. The ruins rest on Apitha Mountain, over the port town of Sami on the island of KefaloniaGreece.

The church and the ruins in the background were used for two different scenes in the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandoline. The first one was at the beginning of the movie, on Saint Gerasimos day, when a man is cured after a procession walks past him. The second scene is the one where Captain Corelli and Pelagio reunite after years.
